Educational visit

Buildings and books are all important, but there’s nothing like a day out on an educational visit to bring learning alive!

We took the children we sponsor (through bursaries), together with the more senior children on an educational visit. We went to the Watamu Turtle Watch centre (http://www.watamuturtles.com) where the children and staff were given a very informative and educational talk about turtle conservation on the coast and the importance to protect these endangered species. Ann was a most amusing and highly entertaining host and all the children and staff loved her warmth and generosity of time. The biggest surprise was seeing ‘Leiko’ – an 80 kilo green leather back turtle waiting for release. The children loved seeing the gardens and what can be made out of waste.

From there we visited Watamu’s Recycling Centre - http://www.watamu.biz/watamu-community. Here the children learnt about clean hands and how to protect their feet from jiggers, as well as seeing how all the waste from glass bottles and plastic flip flops and bottle tops washed up on the beaches can all be recycled and put to good use. We’re hoping this will inspire them to keep their own villages clean and encourage them to recycle themselves, as well as try some decorative art with waste – such as bottle tops!  Watch this space!
